- The media reported about more than 10 injured NATO soldiers during the exercises due to the cold
More than a dozen American soldiers at a NATO exercise in northern Sweden have been sent home due to injuries sustained in extreme cold conditions. This was reported on February 9 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
"A few days after the start of recent exercises in northern Sweden, more than a dozen soldiers were sent home with injuries sustained in low temperatures, from boils and blisters to discoloration of their limbs," the publication says.
According to the newspaper, one European soldier was hospitalized, risking losing several toes. Others complained of all kinds of calluses and blisters caused by frost.
The soldiers were at a temperature of -34 degrees. They had to dive into an ice hole and spend the night in snow shelters in the forest. The purpose of the exercises was to prepare Americans for combat operations in the Arctic.
On February 3, Colonel Martin O'Donnell, the official representative of the headquarters of the Supreme High Command of the United Armed Forces of NATO in Europe (SHAPE), announced that NATO countries had begun planning an observation operation in the Arctic amid the escalation of the situation around Greenland. It was noted that the planned operation is expected to strengthen the positions of the military alliance in the Far North and in the Arctic region.
