The United States is interested in cooperation with Russia in the Arctic and, in particular, mining projects. Irina Strelnikova, Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Regional Studies and Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Arctic Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, told about this on Monday, February 9.

"The dialogue between Russia and the United States on cooperation [in the Arctic] has resumed, and this is already an important step forward," she said in an interview. Lenta.Ru .

Strelnikova noted that the conflict in Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation are hindering the practical implementation of statements by the Russian and American authorities on Arctic cooperation.

In addition, Strelnikova said that the military bases that the United States plans to build in Greenland will be under American sovereignty, writes Life.Ru .

Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Europe was "persistently pushing through" the Black Sea region, ignoring the existing Black Sea Cooperation Organization, and the same applies to the Arctic, RT reports.

Earlier, on January 16, the head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia, Robert Agee, told Izvestia that US business could cooperate with Russia in the Arctic while normalizing relations between the countries.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
