Patients with chronic gum diseases — gingivitis, periodontitis — are at risk of vascular atherosclerosis, heart attacks and strokes. Victoria Karatayeva, the chief dentist of All Yours Dentistry, an expert on primary care, told about this on Monday, February 9.

According to the dentist, with chronic inflammation with bleeding, pathogenic bacteria easily penetrate the vascular wall, cause it to thicken and spread through the body through the blood stream, damaging target organs — the heart, kidneys, and eyes.

"Often, highly specialized specialists, such as cardiologists, ophthalmologists, refer a patient to the dentist to check the health of the mouth and teeth, to exclude the presence of chronic foci of infection, because the success of treatment and prevention of serious general somatic diseases directly depends on the identification and elimination of all causes," the expert said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

Karatayeva explained that with inflammation in the gums, the immune system triggers a protective reaction, chronic inflammation develops, which affects blood vessels throughout the body, leading to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques and blood clots.

"Patients with concomitant vascular and cardiac pathology are at greater risk of experiencing cardiovascular disasters than others. Also at risk are people with diabetes, smokers, people who have not visited dentists for years, and those who do not pay due attention to hygiene and prevention of dental and gum diseases," the doctor concluded.

Earlier that day, orthopedic dentist Maxim Matyukhin, chief physician of the dental clinic, told RIAMO that preventive visits to the dentist should be scheduled every six months to prevent the development of complications. The specialist noted that it is necessary to come to the dentist for an examination before the pain appears, since pain is an extreme symptom. 360.ru .

On February 4, Denis Moiseev, Associate Professor of the Department of Therapeutic Dentistry at the Pirogov University Institute of Dentistry, dentist, periodontist, said that bleaching strips and gels purchased on marketplaces can cause serious damage to tooth enamel.
