Russian figure skater Pyotr Gumennik will open the competition in the men's short program of the 2026 Winter Olympics on Tuesday, February 10. According to the results of the draw, he will be the first to enter the ice. His performance will begin at 20:30 Moscow time.

The figure skater will perform to the soundtrack from the film "Onegin" by composer Edgar Hakobyan. This composition was determined at the last moment. On the eve of the start, the athlete had to urgently change the music due to copyright issues. Initially, he chose music from the movie "The Perfumer" for the performance.

Before figure skating, 23-year-old Peter Gumennik tried himself in various sports. However, it was ice that became his true calling. The figure skater started skating at the age of four. His first mentor was Tatiana Yurysheva, the current director of the Spartak school.

Since the age of seven, Peter has been perfecting his skills in the group with Oleg Tataurov and Olga Efimova. As a junior, he was already confidently asserting himself at Russian and international competitions. An important milestone in his career was his victory at the Youth Olympic Festival in Erzurum, Turkey, in the 2016/17 season.

The turning point was in 2017, when Humennik joined Veronika Daineko at the school of the legendary coach Tamara Moskvina. This step has borne fruit: a series of successful performances culminated in a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in 2020. Today, Peter Gumennik is the reigning champion of Russia and a two—time winner of the Russian Grand Prix Final.

At the 2026 Olympic Games, the Russian has one of the most technically difficult numbers - five quadruple jumps in the free program. Ilya Averbukh, the silver medalist of the previous games, noted that the figure skater has a very strong content. According to him, he has every chance to compete for a place on the podium, but everything will depend on the purity of the performance, Averbukh told Sport-Express.

The men's short program is scheduled for February 10, and the free program is scheduled for February 13. The men will be followed by the women on the ice. Russian Adelia Petrosyan will compete in a neutral status at the Olympics in Italy. The women's short program will be held on February 17.
