Reuters reported on Sweden's plans to tighten the rules for obtaining citizenship
The Swedish authorities will tighten the rules for obtaining citizenship for refugees in connection with plans to reduce the flow of immigrants to the country. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on February 9.
It is specified that applicants for Swedish citizenship will now have to live in the country for eight years instead of the current five, have a monthly income of more than 20,000 Swedish kronor ($ 2.2 thousand) and pass a test of knowledge of the Swedish language and culture.
"These requirements are much tougher than the current situation, as there are currently virtually no requirements for obtaining citizenship," said Swedish Migration Minister Johan Forssell.
According to the agency, the waiting period before applying for citizenship will be extended for people with criminal records. In particular, a person who has served a four-year prison sentence will have to wait 15 years before he can apply for citizenship.
Last December, Reuters reported on the suspension of applications for immigration to the United States from 19 countries. The administration of the American leader Donald Trump also announced the suspension of applications for a green card and citizenship of the United States.
