Internal problems in the national energy networks of European countries, as well as difficulties arising in the process of integration between them, cause millions of losses and pose a threat to Europe's energy security. This was reported by Bloomberg on February 9.

"This is part of the European energy paradox, which undermines the competitiveness and energy security of the continent. The members of the European Union are increasing renewable energy capacity at an impressive rate, <...> but problems within and between national energy grids too often hinder its effective use," the article says.

Among the problems of Europe's energy supply, the unwillingness of national governments to sacrifice domestic interests, in particular national energy system operators, in favor of increasing the efficiency of the pan-European energy supply is emphasized.

"The European Agency, which coordinates the activities of national energy regulators, estimated that in 2024, EU member states provided only slightly more than half of their electricity transmission capacity for cross-border trade, which is significantly lower than the minimum requirement of 70%," the newspaper notes.

Against the background of unwillingness to strengthen integration with neighbors, European countries are also suffering losses due to the inability to quickly modernize their aging infrastructure, Bloomberg writes.

According to the statistics provided, in seven of the EU member states, problems with energy grids led to a reduction in renewable energy production of about €7.2 billion in 2024. Moreover, national grid operators spent 4.3 billion euros in the same year in an attempt to reduce network loads by "keeping systems afloat."

Frank Kane, a business analyst and adviser to the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Energy, said on January 30 that Europe faced difficulties in finding alternative sources of hydrocarbons after the refusal of supplies from Russia, which limits its energy policy options. He stressed that the US desire to control Greenland and the existential threat to the North Atlantic Alliance create additional difficulties for Europe's energy policy.
