Russia welcomes the mediation efforts of the Sultanate of Oman in the negotiation process between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States. This was announced on February 9 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"We welcome the mediation efforts of the Sultanate of Oman. <...> Of course, we (Russia. We proceed from the fact that there should be a peaceful settlement here (between Iran and the United States. — Ed.)," he said during his speech at the XV Middle East Conference on the sidelines of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

The Russian Foreign Minister added that on Sunday, February 8, he had a conversation with his Omani counterpart Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud al-Busaidi. He clarified that Moscow maintains constant contacts with Tehran, in which Beijing also participates.

Al-Busaidi said on February 6 that the Iranian delegation had held very serious talks on its nuclear program with representatives of the American side in Muscat. At the same time, it was noted that during the contacts, the parties managed to agree on the continuation of the diplomatic process.

Two days later, information about a telephone conversation between Lavrov and the Omani Foreign Minister appeared on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry. It was emphasized that during the conversation, the ministers expressed the view that it was necessary to promote the continuation of dialogue in order to find mutually acceptable solutions that would help reduce the risks of armed conflict and ensure stability in the region.
