Over the past weekend, 372 road accidents were recorded on Russian roads, in which 58 people were killed and 537 injured. 33 of the dead were drivers and passengers. This was reported to Izvestia on February 9 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

As a result of 71 accidents involving pedestrians, three people were killed, and 72 more were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured are 11 child pedestrians, six of them were injured when crossing the roadway in unintended places. Of the total number of pedestrian incidents, 36 occurred at pedestrian crossings and 35 outside their area of operation.

In addition, over the weekend, 21 bus accidents were recorded on the roads of the Russian Federation, in which one person was killed, and 37 more road users, including one child, needed medical help. 17 bus accidents were caused by traffic violations committed by their drivers.

47 accidents involving minors were registered, 53 young road users were injured, including 42 passengers. Two child passengers died in one accident. So, in the Irkutsk region, on 78 km of the federal highway R-258 Baikal, a 26-year-old female passenger car driver drove into the oncoming lane in a prohibited place, where she collided with a truck. As a result of the accident, she and the two children she was transporting were killed: an eight-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl. Both children were in the back seat of their car at the time of the collision, while the boy was wearing a seat belt, and his sister was being transported using a child restraint device.

The State Traffic Inspectorate urged motorists to always be attentive, collected and disciplined when driving vehicles. Drivers were advised to refrain from risky driving, distraction, exceeding the speed limit, sudden changes of lanes, overtaking, entering the lane of oncoming traffic even in the permitted places and other dangerous maneuvers.

"While driving, choose the speed limit depending on the time of day, the condition of the roadway and weather conditions. Remember that not only your life and health depend on your driving skills, driving experience, well-being and law-abiding driving behavior, but also the lives and health of other road users, including your passengers. We also draw the attention of drivers to the strict observance of the rules for the safe transportation of children. Take care of your young passengers, preventing even the prerequisites for a possible tragedy," said Police Colonel Sergey Hrantskevich, head of the Department for the Promotion of road safety and prevention of child traffic injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Moscow State Traffic Inspectorate will hold a citywide preventive event "Pedestrian crossing". It will take place tomorrow, February 10th. Employees of the highway patrol service will monitor the observance of traffic rules by both pedestrians and drivers.
