British Prime Minister Keir Starmer may leave his post after the resignation of his chief of staff Morgan McSweeney amid the scandal surrounding the appointment of financier Jeffrey Epstein's friend Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States. This was reported by Bloomberg on February 8.

Sources told Bloomberg that officials in the Prime minister's office were preparing for cabinet ministers to privately advise Starmer to resign or threaten their resignations if he did not do so. One of the assistants to the minister of the Starmer cabinet said that the chances that the British prime minister will hold out until the end of the week are 50-50.

The day before, McSweeney resigned as Starmer's chief of staff, saying he takes "full responsibility" for his advice to hire Mandelson as U.S. ambassador, despite his known ties to Epstein.

On the same day, Kirill Dmitriev, special representative of the President of Russia and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), suggested on February 8 that McSweeney's resignation could be followed by the departure of the Prime minister himself.

Last September, Starmer fired Mandelson from his post as the kingdom's ambassador to the United States because of his ties to Epstein. The emails show that the depth and extent of his relationship with the financier are significantly different from those known at the time of his appointment.
