Musk compared his Starbase spaceport in Texas to a "technological monastery"
The SpaceX Starbase spaceport of American billionaire Elon Musk, located in Texas, looks like a "technological monastery", since most of the employees at the space base live there alone. Musk himself told about this on February 8 in an interview with blogger Dwarkesh Patel.
According to the entrepreneur, such an order may be similar to the life of male monks at a monastery.
"I call it the 'soulmate problem.' <...> It's like a technological monastery, remote [employees] and mostly guys," Musk said.
It is noted that the reason for this was the problems in Texas with finding a job that would not be related to the activities of SpaceX. Because of this, the company's employees and their families do not want to move to Texas.
Bloomberg reported in May 2025 that Starbase could become a separate city. Currently, about 260 SpaceX employees live permanently in the vicinity of the launch site. At the same time, another 3.1 thousand workers of the company come from the nearest large city of Brownsville.
