- Politico has learned about Washington's disappointment in Venezuela's opposition leader
White House advisers express concern about the actions of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, believing that her comments on the timing of the elections could undermine the US strategy in the region. This was reported by the Politico newspaper.
"Maria Corina Machado is just trying to nullify it all...> she's selfish. She is a destructive factor and works against the goals of US national security," the White House adviser told the publication.
According to him, Machado's recent statements about the possibility of holding elections in Venezuela within a year are regarded as an attempt to maintain political relevance and "undermine the work of the administration of US President Donald Trump to rebuild the country, release political prisoners and strengthen cooperation with the opposition."
Machado's representatives reject the criticism, calling it "media noise," and claim that the interests of the United States and the Venezuelan people coincide in striving for a "prosperous, free and democratic Venezuela."
The White House stressed that the elections should take place "at an appropriate time" when the country is ready for a transparent process.
On January 20, US President Donald Trump announced that he intends to introduce the head of the Venezuelan opposition, Machado, into the processes related to the situation in the Latin American country. The American leader recalled that Machado presented him with her Nobel Peace Prize medal.
