- Zakharova called the denial of the Russian Federation resolution on Nazism by Germany and Italy alarming.
Russia is concerned that the Russian resolution against the glorification of Nazism at the United Nations (UN) was not supported by Germany, Italy and Japan, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on February 8.
"The vote against the resolution of the former Axis member states is particularly alarming against this background," RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.
The diplomat stressed that given the black pages of the history of these countries in the 20th century, their actions regarding the resolution cast doubt on Berlin, Rome and Tokyo. At the same time, they had previously admitted that they were guilty of unleashing the Second World War and repented for the genocide and numerous crimes against humanity.
"What additional and expanded role can these countries play in the work of the UN Security Council (in the context of discussions on increasing the number of permanent and non-permanent members of this body) if they vote against the basic principles laid down in the UN Charter?" asked Zakharova.
Also on February 7, the diplomat noted that the countries of the European Union (EU) had no consolidated intention of supporting Russia's resolution against the glorification of Nazism at the United Nations. According to her, the situation after February 2022 worked as a litmus test, which exposed the true attitude of the EU towards this document.
