No imported cases of Nipah virus have been reported in Russia

Currently, no imported cases of the disease caused by the Nipah virus have been registered in Russia. This was announced on February 8 by Rospotrebnadzor in the MAX messenger.

"In connection with new media reports that a woman infected with the Nipah virus died in Bangladesh, Rospotrebnadzor informs that there are currently no imported cases of the disease caused by the Nipah virus in Russia. However, it is very important for tourists to follow preventive measures when traveling to endemic regions," the message says.

It is noted that to reduce the risk of infection, it is necessary to avoid contact with bats and sick animals, not to consume raw or unpasteurized products that may have come into contact with animals (for example, freshly squeezed juices), wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and observe personal hygiene rules.

Rospotrebnadzor notes that a system is operating at border checkpoints to identify people with signs of infectious diseases, and in the Russian Federation there are test systems for diagnosing the virus. The situation is under the control of the department.

On January 27, the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated a low risk of further spread of the Nipah virus, but stressed that due to insufficient knowledge of the virus, there is a possibility of other outbreaks. WHO spokesman Tarik Zhazarevich said that Nipah has a mortality rate of 40 to 75%, depending on the strain of the virus and the level of medical care.

To prevent infection, the organization recommends boiling date palm juice, thoroughly washing and peeling fruits before use, and discarding fruits with signs of bat bites.
