AP pointed to Trump's involvement of the US military in diplomacy on Iran and Ukraine
The administration of US President Donald Trump is taking unusual steps in diplomacy, appointing senior military leaders as key negotiators on sensitive issues of Iran and Ukraine. This is reported by the Associated Press (AP).
The commander-in-chief in the Middle East, Admiral Brad Cooper, participated in negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program in Oman, appearing there in full uniform. At the same time, Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll acts as a key negotiator for the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, working with Ukrainian representatives. According to AP, this approach reflects how the Republican administration has "turned around" traditional U.S. foreign policy.
"It often takes a huge amount of time, investment, and hard work to get to the point where you can say that diplomacy has succeeded," said Eliza Evers, a former employee of the US National Security Apparatus.
At the same time, former State Department adviser Eliot Cohen, who worked during the George W. Bush administration, recalled that American generals had historically participated in negotiations with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. He noted that there is a long tradition when the presidents of the United States as special envoys attract extraordinary people whom they trust.
On February 6, the Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM) announced that the strike aircraft carrier group of the US Navy, led by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, had crossed into the Arabian Sea. It is specified that during the transition, military aircraft flew over the group of ships, providing escort.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 29 that military action in the context of the Iranian issue could lead to serious consequences for regional security. He stressed that Moscow considers power scenarios against Iran unacceptable, which could destabilize the situation in the Middle East.
