MEP Kartheiser called the EU's dreams of a change of power in Moscow unrealistic
By tightening visa requirements for Russians, the European Union dreams of a change of government in Moscow, but such a scenario is completely unrealistic. This was announced on February 8 by Fernand Kartheiser, a member of the European Parliament from Luxembourg.
"This EU dream has a name — regime change in Moscow. However, a realistic analysis of the political situation in Russia shows that such a scenario should not be expected at all," the MEP said.
According to him, Brussels seeks to arouse Russians' dissatisfaction with the government, but such measures are pointless and only force tourists to choose other destinations. Kartheiser stressed that the restrictions had caused significant damage to the tourism industry of the EU countries, especially France and Italy, for which Russian tourists were an important source of income. The only positive thing he mentioned was that such sanctions could theoretically be easily lifted.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said earlier in the day that the EU was ready to negotiate with Russia, but warned against uncoordinated contacts with the country at the level of Europe, Ukraine and the United States. The reason for this reaction was the information about Bonn's alleged visit to Russia.
On February 4, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silinja and Estonian President Alar Karis called for the resumption of direct negotiations with Russia and proposed appointing an EU special envoy for these purposes.
