Modern Russian has about 500 thousand words. Russian Russian Linguistics Department Head Pavel Katyshev announced this on February 8. The head of the Department of General and Russian Linguistics at the Alexander Pushkin State Institute of the Russian Language Pavel Katyshev.

"Having made all the calculations, we come to a final rough estimate: there are about half a million words in modern Russian," Katyshev told RIA Novosti.

According to the professor, the number of words was estimated based on data from various dictionaries and reference books.
