The President of Slovakia criticized the decision to transfer the MiG-29 to Kiev.
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini said that the transfer of MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine without an adequate replacement weakened the country's defense capability. He announced this on February 7 on his Facebook page (banned in Russia; owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation).
"To this day, I consider it a mistake that Slovakia got rid of the MiGs, having no replacement at that time," Pellegrini wrote.
He also rejected the previous authorities' claims that the planes were allegedly scrap metal, stressing that if that were the case, none of them would have been able to fly from Slovakia to Ukraine.
The Head of State added that he personally tested the MiG-29 when he was Prime Minister, and the aircraft was fully capable of fulfilling its tasks.
Earlier, Ukraine asked Poland to consider the possibility of supplying other types of aircraft instead of MiG-29 fighters. This was announced on February 5 by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk after a meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev. According to him, Warsaw is studying this issue and will make a decision after consultations with the country's military leadership.
