On February 7, the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, Tatiana Moskalkova, reported egregious cases of deaths of Russian servicemen in Ukrainian captivity as a result of ill-treatment.

"We had a glaring case when our prisoners of war were tortured and died. I raised this issue, the names of these guys are known. For my part, of course, I will always set strict conditions on the inadmissibility of such treatment of prisoners of war," Moskalkova said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

She noted that such situations contradict "not only international law, but also ordinary human moral norms." The Ombudsman also said that she had appealed to the Ukrainian Commissioner Dmitry Lubinets to strengthen control over medical care for prisoners. According to her, Russian prisoners of war themselves report cases when they did not receive the medical assistance necessary for their rescue.

On the same day, Belarus reported that several Russian servicemen who had returned from Ukrainian captivity as part of an exchange were admitted in serious condition to a medical facility in the country. During the diagnosis, one of them was found to have intra-abdominal bleeding with a biphasic rupture of the spleen.

On February 5, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that Russia had returned 157 servicemen from Ukrainian captivity, and in return, 157 prisoners of war of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had been transferred. It was noted that the returned Russian servicemen are in Belarus, they are being assisted.
