Imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the European Union (EU) in January reached a record high amid the EU's decision to impose a complete ban on Russian gas supplies from 2027. This is stated on February 7 in TASS calculations based on data from the Bruegel European analytical center.

"EU imports of Russian LNG in January amounted to 2.276 billion cubic meters (slightly above the level of December 2025) against 2.05 billion cubic meters. m in January 2025," the agency reports.

According to analysts, in January 2025, Russian LNG supplies to the EU amounted to 2.05 billion cubic meters. At the same time, imports from the United States and Trinidad and Tobago increased from the American direction. In January, it increased by 18% compared to December, reaching 8 billion cubic meters.

In addition, about 772 million cubic meters of LNG were supplied to Europe from Africa in January, and another 571 million cubic meters from the Middle East. In general, the total LNG imports by EU countries in January, according to Bruegel, amounted to 12.2 billion cubic meters, which is 1.3% more than in December 2025 and 6% higher than in the same period last year.

On February 3, it became known that in January 2026, European countries made the most of Russian gas supplies, both liquefied and piped. According to the European Network of Gas Transmission System Operators (ENTSOG), in January, Russia increased fuel exports to Europe via the Turkish Stream pipeline by 11% year-on-year, to 1.73 billion cubic meters.

Vladimir Demidov, an analyst of the resources and energy market, head of the Future Energy Laboratory at Moscow State Medical University Skolkovo, suggested on February 4 that the growth of gas purchases in Europe had increased due to frosts. Winter has forced a significant increase in gas extraction from underground storage facilities (UGS), which has led to a significant reduction in their current occupancy.
