- Russians were warned about a new version of fraud under the guise of courier delivery
Fraudsters have perfected the scenario of deceiving Russians under the guise of courier delivery, starting to impersonate the victim's relatives. This was announced on February 7 by Angara Security.
"The key difference of the new [fraud] scheme is the strengthening of trust through "social bonding." The scammers claim that the sender of the parcel is a relative of the recipient," RIA Novosti reports.
Yuri Duboshei, an expert on cyber intelligence at the company, explained that the criminals' goal is to gain control over the victim's account, most often on the Gosuslugi portal, confirm the action on her behalf, or prepare an attack to steal money.
He added that unlike the old scheme, where the legend of "profitable delivery" from an unknown sender was used, now the attackers significantly increase psychological pressure and trust.
Experts remind that real employees of delivery services never request SMS codes by phone, and in case of suspicious calls, the conversation should be interrupted and the information clarified by official numbers.
On the same day, Evgeniya Lazareva, the project manager of the Popular Front For Borrowers' Rights and coordinator of the Moshelovka platform, was warned about fraudulent calls from short bank numbers. She clarified that the attackers use IP telephony technologies that allow them to substitute the caller ID.
