One of the strongest solar activity bursts in the 21st century has suddenly ended

The powerful surge of solar activity observed since the beginning of February suddenly stopped. This was announced on February 7 by the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS).

"One of the strongest solar activity bursts in the 21st century, observed since the beginning of February, ended so suddenly, as if someone had pulled a switch," the laboratory said in a Telegram channel message.

According to scientists, active region 4366, which was located opposite the Earth, lacked only one event to repeat the current century's record for the number of strong flares, and two to overcome it. The record belongs to the 3664 region, which produced 64 strong or very strong outbreaks in May 2024.

On February 2, the press service of the IKI RAS reported a powerful Class X solar flare. The phenomenon was recorded at 02:57 Moscow time. It was clarified that as a result, the Ground was not in the direct impact zone.
