Due to a technical error, the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb transferred 2 thousand bitcoins to users, the total transfer amounted to 620 thousand bitcoins. This was reported on February 7 by the Yonhap news agency with reference to representatives of the company.

"The incident occurred due to the fact that a Bithumb employee mistakenly specified a BTC payment unit instead of a Korean won when awarding rewards to the promotion participants," the agency quoted representatives of the exchange.

As a result, 249 users received an average of 2.49 thousand bitcoins each instead of the won, which is about $166 million per person.

After the error was discovered, the exchange suspended operations and blocked the withdrawal of funds, which allowed the return of most bitcoins. In connection with the incident, the South Korean financial regulator Financial Supervisory Service sent specialists for verification.

According to Binance data from January 31, the cost of bitcoin dropped below the $80 thousand mark. This became a level that the exchange rate of the first cryptocurrency has not touched since the second half of April 2025, according to trading data. This dynamic reflects the continued pressure on the crypto market amid general market uncertainty and a decrease in investor appetite for risky assets.
