German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the European Union (EU) is ready to negotiate with Russia, but warned against uncoordinated contacts with Russia at the level of Europe, Ukraine and the United States. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on February 6.

"Of course, we are always ready for negotiations with Russia. Negotiations are currently underway here in Abu Dhabi, coordinated with us, between the American representative, the Ukrainian government and the Russian government. If we can help make these negotiations even better, make them more successful, then we are doing it," Merz said during the talks in Abu Dhabi. He also noted that the EU would not open any parallel channels for negotiations.

The reason for this reaction was information about the alleged visit of French President Emmanuel Bonn's diplomatic adviser to Russia on Tuesday.

Merz warned against making uncoordinated decisions and said that the presence of Macron's adviser in Moscow had been agreed with the EU.

On February 5, the UAE Foreign Minister said that the second round of negotiations on Ukraine in Abu Dhabi demonstrated the existence of a common foundation for further progress on the part of the participants in the dialogue. On the same day, Special envoy of the President of the United States Stephen Witkoff said that the trilateral dialogue was detailed and productive, and also noted that consultations would continue soon.
