Germany, against the background of an active build-up of military potential, can claim the role of a new hegemon in Europe. The American magazine Foreign Affairs wrote about this on February 6.

The publication attributes this prospect to a sharp increase in the country's defense spending. It is noted that Berlin is already a leader in Europe in terms of the military budget, and by 2029 its financing may exceed $ 189 billion. The article also indicates that the German authorities do not rule out the return of universal conscription.

The authors pay special attention to the possible coming to power of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which they characterize as friendly to Russia. According to Foreign Affairs, in this case, the party can use military force to put pressure on neighboring states, which can turn Germany into a nationalist hegemon.

From the data of the statistical bureau Destatis, it became known on February 1 that the German national debt increased by almost a fifth from the first quarter of 2021 to the third quarter of 2025, reaching a record of €2.79 trillion. One of the factors contributing to the increase in debt was assistance to Ukraine within the framework of the sanctions policy of the European Union (EU).

Alice Weidel, co-chair of the German Alternative for Germany party, said in an interview with Hallo Meinung on January 26 that Chancellor Friedrich Merz's policy had led to Germany losing its influence in the new world order.
