The topic of the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START Treaty) needs further elaboration by Russia and the United States. This is how Senator of the Federation Council Grigory Karasin reacted on Friday, February 6, to the words of the President of the United States Donald Trump about the need to develop a new agreement.

"In any case, the START Treaty topic needs to be worked out jointly by the two sides. We just have to wait for contacts between representatives of Russia and the United States, because so far we see that the position of the Americans is quite zigzagging," the politician said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

Karasin added that the parties need to clarify their positions in order to understand exactly where they are at the moment.

"In any case, as our president said, we will approach this topic very responsibly," he concluded.

On February 6, Thomas Dinanno, US Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, said that Trump intends to seek a new arms control agreement, as the START Treaty allegedly had shortcomings. 360.ru .

According to him, the American leader has already confirmed his desire to work out a new treaty. The main task, Dinanno noted, is to create a more comprehensive and effective arms control mechanism, RT reports.

The START Treaty was signed in 2010 and was the last existing agreement between Moscow and Washington in the field of strategic nuclear disarmament.

On the same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced Russia's readiness to discuss security issues with the United States. The minister noted that Moscow is ready for any development of events after the expiration of the START Treaty, and stressed that now there is a vacuum in this matter.

On February 5, Trump expressed support for the creation of a new and improved strategic arms agreement to replace the START Treaty. He noted that the new agreement should be more modern and improved.
