Rubio stated the need for multilateral participation in the START Treaty analogue
The US authorities believe that arms control should be considered in a multilateral format, rather than remaining an exclusively bilateral issue. This was announced on February 6 by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at a press conference.
"Washington believes that arms control should become a multilateral, not a bilateral issue," Rubio was quoted as saying by British radio station LBC.
According to him, the discussion of a possible new treaty, which could replace the START Treaty, will require considerable time. However, this does not mean that such efforts should be abandoned.
Rubio stressed that arms control should not be limited to the US-Russia format. In his opinion, other States are also responsible for maintaining strategic stability and should be involved in relevant negotiations.
"The president has previously made it clear that for true arms control in the 21st century, it is impossible to do something that does not include China, because of their vast and rapidly growing reserves," Rubio added.
On February 5, the White House announced that the United States would discuss with Russia the prospects for concluding an agreement to replace the START Treaty. The diplomat expects that the new agreement will be more modern and relevant, as well as that it will be designed for a long time.
