Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday, February 6, that recent words by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine could be interpreted as evidence of preparations for a foreign intervention on Ukrainian territory.

"That <... Rutte said, speaking in parliament, in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, it means that an intervention is being prepared. He said that the security guarantees provide for the automatic actions of the coalition of those who wish at one stage independently, at another stage with the support of the United States, that Britain and France are ready to deploy their troops on Ukrainian territories," Lavrov said after talks with OSCE Chairman Ignazio Cassis and OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioglu.

He added that the "undisguised military intervention" in Ukraine poses a threat to regional security.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on February 4 that NATO was planning an undisguised military intervention in Ukraine. She also stressed that the deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine is categorically unacceptable for Russia.
