The leadership of the European Union (EU) believes that former Finnish President Sauli Niinisto could be suitable for the role of special envoy for Ukraine to establish contacts with Russia. His candidacy is currently under discussion, the Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported on February 6.

The creation of the post of special envoy was discussed during a meeting in Paris between French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa.

It all started after Macron publicly announced his intention to contact the Kremlin to resume dialogue on peace in Ukraine.

The need for an EU special envoy was first discussed during informal contacts. Further discussions will continue at the next informal EU summit. According to media reports, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Italy Mario Draghi may also apply for this post.

The Politico newspaper reported on January 14 that European countries intend to appoint their own negotiator for dialogue with Russia and participation in the discussion of the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. According to three diplomats and officials, supporters of the plan, including France and Italy, have enlisted the support of the European Commission (EC) for the initiative.

Bundestag deputy and foreign policy expert of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) faction Adis Akhmetovich said on January 28 that it was necessary to establish direct negotiations between the EU and Russia to resolve the situation in Ukraine.
