Oncologist warned about the likelihood of cancer with severity after eating
A constant feeling of heaviness and rapid satiety, even after a small meal, may indicate the development of stomach cancer, especially in people over 50 years of age. Nikita Makarov, an oncologist and a surgeon at the SM Clinic, told Izvestia about this on February 7.
According to the Ministry of Health, 40 thousand Russians are diagnosed with stomach cancer every year, and 70% of patients learn about the disease as early as stage 3-4. Stomach cancer is often disguised as gastritis. After 50 years of age, against the background of mucosal atrophy, the tumor can grow slowly and almost painlessly, but at the same time gradually narrow the lumen of the stomach. That is why the first symptoms often become rapid saturation and heaviness.
The oncologist warned against the dangerous habit of self-medication.
"In my practice, there have been patients who have been taking medications for heartburn for years, believing that they have gastritis. As a result, we lost valuable time. If people had gastroscopy on time, the disease could have been detected at the first stage, when it is best treatable," the specialist emphasized.
Makarov recommended that you be on your guard, especially after the age of 45-50, when you experience symptoms such as constant heaviness after eating, decreased appetite for no reason, unexplained weight loss, anemia, or an unexpected aversion to meat. Even if a person has only one or two of these symptoms, this is already a good reason to consult a doctor, he noted.
The doctor called gastroscopy a key method of early diagnosis, which allows you to see changes in the mucosa at the very initial stages.
"Heaviness after eating doesn't always indicate cancer. But the symptom cannot be ignored, especially if you encounter it all the time," concluded Makarov.
On February 3, oncologist, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ali Mudunov said that the average age of cancer in Russia is 65 years. Doctors do not record significant changes in the age structure of patients.
