Lavrov pointed to the real threat of self-destruction of the OSCE
The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has approached the real threat of self-destruction. This was stated on February 6 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a meeting with the Secretary General of the organization and Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.
"I will not even dwell in detail on examples of how the OSCE found itself in the current situation of the deepest crisis, approached the real threat of self—destruction," Lavrov said.
The minister explained that the reason for the crisis was the radical departure of most Western countries from the principles laid down in the Helsinki Final Act and subsequent declarations of the organization. At the same time, Lavrov noted that Russia appreciates Switzerland's interest as the OSCE chairman in a specific diplomatic dialogue with Moscow.
For his part, the Swiss Foreign Minister expressed his desire to make progress in restoring the organization's dialogue with Russia.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on February 2 that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would hold talks with the Swiss Foreign Minister in Moscow on Friday, February 6. She clarified that overcoming the OSCE crisis was on the agenda of the negotiations. The parties will discuss the restoration of military-political, economic, environmental and humanitarian security in Europe and the role of the organization in these processes.
On January 22, Russia's Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Dmitry Polyansky, announced Russia's readiness to return to work in the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly while rejecting Russophobia. According to him, the European security system is deteriorating.
