Parking in courtyards remains one of the riskiest ways to store a car, since it is there that cars are most often damaged or become the object of interest of intruders. Alexander Kornev, head of the Department for Work with Importers at Gazprombank Autoleasing, told Izvestia on February 7 about which threats should be paid attention to and how to reduce the risks when parking at home.

According to him, courtyards often become a high-risk area due to dense buildings and lack of control. In narrow passageways, a car can be hit while maneuvering, and in passageways cars are more often stolen or damaged intentionally. Previously, attackers often disassembled such cars for spare parts, removing elements that can be quickly dismantled, and today such risks have not completely disappeared.

The expert recommends leaving the car in well-lit areas whenever possible and paying attention to the presence of street cameras. Surveillance by itself does not guarantee protection, but it can play a crucial role in analyzing an incident, especially if the owner has access to the broadcast or recordings. Integrated security systems are becoming an additional security factor. As Kornev notes, the combination of an immobilizer, non-standard technical solutions and a tracker significantly complicates hijacking and often forces attackers to abandon the attempt.

"It is important to pay special attention to insurance protection. The casco policy allows you to compensate for damage or theft and is especially relevant for popular models under the age of five and premium cars. If the car stays stationary for a long time, a secure parking lot is a more reliable option. Hijackers often track down such cars, realizing that they have time to hide their tracks, and in winter, a thick layer of snow on the body becomes an additional signal," the auto expert explained.

The condition of the car also affects its safety. During the cold season, it is important to regularly clean the body from snow and reagents to avoid corrosion and accidental damage by utility vehicles. In summer, it's worth keeping the body clean, as dust patterns often turn into scratches on the varnish. It is not recommended to park the car in narrow driveways, under trees or near old structures that can damage the car in strong winds.

The expert emphasizes that even the little things matter. Things left in the cabin can provoke a break-in, and unclosed windows or hatches allow intruders to get documents or bags. All damages, even minor ones, should be recorded and, if necessary, reported to the police or the management company. Interaction with neighbors becomes an additional level of protection: the exchange of contacts helps to respond faster to suspicious situations or to find out about an accident in the yard in time.

According to Alexander Kornev, careful attention to parking and simple precautions do not provide an absolute guarantee, but they significantly reduce the likelihood of damage and help preserve the car in an urban environment.

On January 27, Alexander Abramov, Executive Director of Sberbank Insurance, spoke about non-insurable situations. In car insurance (CASCO), payments are not required if the damage is due to natural wear and tear of the car — replacement of brake pads, shock absorbers, oil and other elements of scheduled maintenance. Also, the use of a car for other purposes is not recognized as an insured event, for example, to participate in races or to operate a taxi without an appropriate option.
