An emergency warning has been issued for Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands due to bad weather related to the cyclone in the Sea of Okhotsk. This was reported on February 6 on the website of the Main Directorate (GU) of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation in the region.
"Emergency warning for February 7 and 8, 2026. <... The cyclone will continue to have an impact on the Sakhalin Region. According to the Sakhalin UGMS Federal State Budgetary Budgetary Institution, on the night of February 7, winds of 22-27 m/s and gusts of 33-35 m/s (hurricane) are expected in the South Kuril and Kuril regions," the statement said.
It is emphasized that from Saturday, February 7, moderate snow is expected in Korsakovsky, Dolinsky, Anivsky, Kholmsky, Nevelsky, Makarovsky, Tomarinsky, Uglegorsky, Nogliksky, Okhinsky districts and in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Precipitation, as specified, may be heavy in the eastern part of the region. The text also notes that the next day, Sunday, February 8, there will be an avalanche danger in the Tomarinsky, Kholmsky and Nevelsky districts.
The ministry called on people staying in the listed areas not to leave their locality unless absolutely necessary, and also to notify their loved ones about the weather conditions. They also appealed to tourist groups to wait out the worsening weather before setting off on expeditions.
On February 2, weather forecasters also issued a warning in Sochi due to large waves and increased sea waves. It was emphasized that the representatives of the operational services were transferred to an enhanced mode of operation in this region, in the mountains of which there was also a high avalanche risk.
