Bessent spoke about the role of the US Treasury in Iran's economic crisis
The actions of the US Treasury Department caused an economic crisis and subsequent protests in Iran. The head of the American department, Scott Bessent, admitted this on February 5.
"What we did was create a shortage of dollars in the country [in Iran] <...> The central bank had to print money. The Iranian currency collapsed, inflation soared, and that's why we saw the Iranian people on the streets," Bessent said during testimony before the Senate Committee on Economics.
According to him, this plan was conceived back in March 2025, but the result was visible only at the end of the year.
