- The expert stated that it is impossible to replace people in logistics with artificial intelligence.
The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in logistics will not lead to the replacement of people and will not reduce the acute shortage of personnel in the industry. Harold Vlasov, Managing Director of the NC Logistic logistics operator, told Izvestia on February 6.
According to the expert, despite the active use of AI for data processing, forecasting shipments and optimizing routes, the technology remains only a tool in the hands of specialists.
"The key feature of such solutions is that they work only in conjunction with a person who runs and controls all processes and is responsible for the result. Artificial intelligence is becoming a tool for them, but not a substitute," Vlasov explained.
He noted that even the most advanced systems need to be configured, monitored and correctly interpreted, which requires the participation of qualified personnel. Moreover, logistics is daily confronted with non—standard situations - changing customer requests, force majeure, and human factors — where the active participation of specialists is necessary.
"The talk that the introduction of AI will lead to the disappearance of jobs in logistics is unfounded. On the contrary, the industry is experiencing an acute shortage of staff, and it is unlikely to disappear in the coming years. This is due to the growth of e—commerce and the increasing complexity of logistics chains, which increase the demand for both line staff and specialists with digital competencies," the managing director emphasized.
Vlasov added that AI is already being used in warehouses to process product data and optimize order assembly, and in transport logistics to calculate routes and inform customers. However, technology is not able to completely eliminate force majeure situations, since logistics remains one of the most dynamic industries.
On December 24, Artur Zarkhi, CEO of the Robots Corporation, spoke about the main problem of Russian robotics. While striving to become one of the world leaders in industrial robotics, the main challenge for Russian enterprises remains the shortage of qualified engineers, which can slow down the technological breakthrough.
The expert said that this area is developing unevenly and the country is still inferior to the world leaders in terms of robot density, but over the past two or three years, more and more companies have begun to introduce technologies, primarily in the automotive and metalworking industries, where robots compensate for the shortage of personnel.
