Winter is the best time for work that will help save energy and avoid problems in the future gardening season. Maria Shurakova, a consultant for working with individuals at the Cycle company, told Izvestia on February 6.

According to the expert, one of the most important stages is clearing the site of weeds and old shoots. Garbage removed on time reduces the risk of spreading diseases and the number of pests, and also simplifies spring work on digging and leveling beds, Shurakova explained. She recommends paying special attention to corners, trunk circles, and paths where leaves tend to accumulate.

The specialist also advises planning beds and planting areas while the ground is covered with snow.

"It is useful to consider crop rotation, the location of perennials, prepare drawings and seed lists in advance, and also take into account last year's problematic areas, such as shadows or flooding. This reduces the risk of errors during sowing," the consultant noted.

The expert pays special attention to plant protection until spring. It is not only about covering young plants with mulch and spruce branches, but also about preventive treatment of trunks, checking supports and protection from rodents. In winter, it is advantageous to prepare materials for shelters, such as agrofibre and arcs, and stock up on rodent repellents.

"In addition, it is better to check and repair garden tools and irrigation systems in advance, as well as keep a seed log. Cleaning the site and careful planning of the beds in winter reduce the amount of work at the beginning of the season by almost half. This saves time and reduces the risk of diseases and crop losses," concluded Shurakova.
