Zoologists at the Moscow Zoo have developed an individual maintenance regime for each animal in conditions of abnormal cold weather. This was announced by the zoo's press service on Thursday, February 5.
"All animals remaining on winter walks are under the close supervision of zoologists and veterinarians. An individual regime of walking, nutrition and heating has been developed for each species, depending on its natural features and physical condition," the press service told the Moscow City News agency.
The zoo also noted that many animals are perfectly adapted to the cold and are happy to walk outdoors.
The press service clarified that reindeer, musk oxen and domestic yaks feel comfortable in such weather, writes Moscow 24. Other winter walkers include red wolves, the Scottish Highland goby, alpacas, the Far Eastern leopard, cougars, lynxes, manul, and some waterfowl and birds of prey.
"Heat—loving species such as Grevy's zebras and black antelopes also come out into the fresh air for a short time," the zoo concluded.
Earlier in the day, the Hydrometeorological Center predicted partly cloudy weather, mostly without precipitation, in the morning fog, frost, and ice in the capital region on February 5.
The air temperature in Moscow will range from -12 to -14 degrees during the day. At night, the thermometer will drop to -23. It will be from -12 to -17 degrees in the region during the day, and at night the temperature may drop to -25.
