The first concrete was poured into the foundation of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant (NPP) in Hungary as part of a project by the Rosatom State Corporation. This was announced on February 5 by the press service of the corporation.

"A solemn ceremony dedicated to the start of pouring the "first concrete" was held at the construction site of the fifth block... The beginning of pouring the "first concrete" into the foundation of the reactor building marks the transition of the facility to the status of a "nuclear power plant under construction" according to IAEA standards," Rosatom said in a Telegram channel.

The event was attended by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto and Rosatom State Corporation CEO Alexei Likhachev.

The head of Rosatom noted that the implementation of the power plant project indicates constructive relations between Russia and Hungary, and that the project was the result of many years of cooperation between the two countries in the nuclear energy sector.

"For Hungary, the Paks-2 NPP is, of course, a strategic step that will bring the country a number of fundamental advantages and will become a driver for the development of the national economy. For Rosatom, this project is another proof of its leadership position in the nuclear industry and its contribution to the development of the Russian industry," Likhachev said in a statement.

Hungary and Russia agreed on the sidelines of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna on September 15 to accelerate investments in the construction of the Paks-2 NPP. It was noted that new NPP power units could be put into operation by the beginning of the next decade.

Later, Szijjarto said on December 9 that there would be no problems with the implementation of the Paks-2 NPP project. He noted that Hungary continues to accelerate the construction of the new Paks-2 nuclear power plant with the participation of the Russian corporation Rosatom, despite attempts to disrupt the project.
