US President Donald Trump wants to install a statue of the Spanish navigator Christopher Columbus in front of the White House. This was reported on February 4 by The Washington Post (WP) newspaper, citing sources.

"Trump plans to install a statue of Christopher Columbus on the White House grounds as part of his latest attempt to transform the presidential campus and glorify the famous and controversial researcher," the publication says.

It is expected that the sculpture will be installed in the southern part of the territory. At the same time, it is noted that plans in this regard may still change.

The monument itself is a reconstruction of the Columbus Monument, which was opened by the 40th President of the United States Ronald Reagan in Baltimore. In 2020, the monument was thrown into the city harbor by protesters during a rally. After the incident, a group of Italian-American businessmen and politicians, with the assistance of sculptors, were able to find the destroyed fragments of the monument and restore it.
