- The head of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Krasnikov, explained the anomalies of comet 3I/ATLAS
The unusual behavior of comet 3I/ATLAS is due to the fact that it does not belong to the Solar System. This was announced on February 5 by the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov.
"There has been a lot of noise right now, there have been bold statements about Comet 3I/ATLAS. The comets of our solar system have clear orbits, because this is not the first time they have been orbiting the Sun, their surface has long been "licked" by the solar wind. And comet 3I/ATLAS was not from our solar system and therefore was not strongly affected by our Sun," Krasnikov told RIA Novosti.
He added that the comet behaved abnormally — changing its rotation speed and color — but from a scientific point of view, this is understandable.
"But returning to the scientific point of view, everything has long been calculated — the orbit, the degree of danger of the comet — and it is clear that it is now moving further towards Jupiter and leaving our solar system," said the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Earlier, on January 21, it was reported that scientists had discovered the first comet of 2026, which could burn up in the Sun in the spring. Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) was first spotted on January 13 at the AMACS1 observatory and is currently located about 200 million km from Earth and 300 million km from the Sun.
