Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silinja and Estonian President Alar Karis called for the resumption of direct negotiations with Russia and proposed appointing a special envoy from the European Union (EU) for these purposes. The politicians stated this in an interview with Euronews TV channel on February 4.

"A couple of years ago, we were in the position that we were not talking <...>, and now we are worried that we are not [at the negotiating table]," said the head of Estonia.

His colleague from Latvia also supported the return of Europe to the negotiation process.

"We must be at the negotiating table, because the Ukrainians themselves started negotiations. So why shouldn't the Europeans negotiate?" — said Silina.
