NYP announced the deletion of thousands of documents in the Epstein case after complaints from victims

The US Department of Justice has removed several thousand documents and media files related to the case of financier Jeffrey Epstein from the website after they revealed incompletely closed names, photos and other data of the victims. This was reported on February 4 by the New York Post (NYP).

"The files were published after US President Donald Trump signed a bill on November 19 to make them public, which requires access to materials related to investigations against Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. However, when more than 3.5 million pages of documents were posted, information was accidentally published that allowed the identification of about a hundred victims, including names, email addresses and bank details," NYP clarifies.

It is noted that errors in editing files were caused by both technical and human factors. As a result, some victims received phone threats and had to change their financial accounts to protect their safety.

According to the newspaper, all the materials provided by the victims themselves or their lawyers were deleted for additional verification and editing. The Ministry of Justice has also reviewed its internal procedures to speed up the correction of errors and republish redacted documents within 24-36 hours after problems are discovered.

Lawyers representing the victims criticized the Ministry of Justice's actions as unacceptable and demanded immediate judicial intervention to protect the victims' privacy.

Discussions are continuing on how to ensure a balance between transparency and protection of personal data in the context of further publication of archives.
