More than 160 people have died in militant attacks in western Nigeria.
At least 162 people were killed in a militant attack on the village of Woro in Kwara State in western Nigeria. This was reported on February 4 by The Guardian newspaper.
"According to reports, the death toll currently stands at 162 people. The search for bodies continues," said Babaomo Ayodeji, secretary of the local branch of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The Nigerian police confirmed the attack, without providing information about the victims. Gunmen broke into the village of Voro on the evening of February 3, setting fire to local shops and the "palace" of the local traditional king, whose location is unknown.
The governor of Kwara State condemned the attack as "a cowardly expression of frustration on the part of terrorist cells in connection with the ongoing counter-terrorism campaigns in some parts of the state."
On the night of January 29, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Niger and members of the Afrika Korps of the Russian Defense Ministry jointly repelled an attack by about 40 militants on Niamey International Airport. It was noted that the Islamic State group (IS, a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation), which is active in the Sahara-Sahel region, claimed responsibility for the attack.
