- The NYT has learned about the willingness of many Ukrainians to cede Donbass for the sake of peace
More and more Ukrainians are ready to give up the entire Donbas for the sake of achieving peace. The American newspaper The New York Times (NYT) wrote about this on January 4.
"More and more Ukrainians say they are ready to hand over to Russia the part of Donbass that is still under Ukrainian control if this puts an end to the conflict," the article says.
The article presents the results of an opinion poll conducted by the Kiev International Institute, in which residents discussed the possibility of ceding territory. In May 2022, 82% of Ukrainians opposed the surrender of the territories, but in the latest survey, 40% agreed to give up the Donbass completely.
The newspaper writes that such a split in society may lead to a revision of the legacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Thus, he risks turning from a heroic leader into a man who has lost a large territory inhabited by more than 190 thousand people.
Kirill Dmitriev, Special Representative of the President of Russia and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), said on January 27 that the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) from the territory of Donbass was the way to conclude a peace agreement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 26 that Russian negotiators continue to defend the interests of the Russian Federation in discussions on resolving the conflict in Ukraine. He clarified that the territorial issue is of fundamental importance to the Russian side, adding that it is a consistent position of the Russian Federation and its leader Vladimir Putin.
