Oncologist dispels myths about cancer treatment
Oncologist-hematologist, practicing physician, PhD Mikhail Laskov listed the popular myths about cancer.
In an interview with the Health Mail on Wednesday, February 4, the specialist said that cancer is not a contagious disease: confusion arises due to infections that can increase the risk of certain types of cancer, but in most cases they do not lead to the disease by themselves and are often preventable or treatable.
The doctor noted that the patient's age does not determine the nature of the tumor: cancer can be aggressive in both the elderly and young people, and treatment difficulties in older age are more often associated with late diagnosis and concomitant diseases. Laskov also stressed that there is no scientific evidence of a link between sugar consumption and the development of cancer — the real risk factor is obesity associated with an unbalanced diet.
Speaking about stress, the doctor explained that a direct cause-and-effect relationship between experiences and the occurrence of cancer has not been proven. Stress worsens the quality of life, but it does not trigger the tumor process, the causes of which are biological in nature. He also warned against pseudoscientific methods like "blood alkalinization" or therapeutic fasting, stressing that such approaches are dangerous and can lead to loss of time.
Mikhail Laskov recalled that modern medicine has effective ways to treat many types of cancer, and early detection of the disease significantly increases the chances of a successful outcome. According to him, trust in evidence-based medicine, correct diagnosis and timely treatment remain key factors in the fight against cancer.
Earlier on February 4, Maxim Zabelin, Minister of Health of the Moscow region, announced that cancer deaths in the region had decreased by 41% over the year. According to him, a network of 25 outpatient cancer care centers has been organized. Self-appointment for mammography is available for women over 40 years of age, notes 360.ru .
On February 3, oncologist, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ali Mudunov said that the average age of cancer in Russia is 65 years. Doctors do not record significant changes in the age structure of patients, clarifies Life.ru . According to him, certain types of tumors, including oral cancer, pharyngeal cancer and laryngeal cancer, are caused by tobacco smoking in 90% of cases. kp.ru .
At that time, Gennady Krasnikov, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that Russian scientists were actively developing new medical technologies, including cancer treatment methods that did not involve the use of chemotherapy. He stressed that the number of such breakthrough developments is large, writes RT.
On the same day, oncologist David Zaridze dispelled the myth of an increase in cancer mortality in Russia. According to him, it is decreasing in Russia and in all developed countries, and it is decreasing solely due to primary prevention, RIAMO notes.
In January, nutritionist and expert on active longevity Elena Zhelyanina warned that regular consumption of fried foods, processed meats, as well as sweets and pastries increases the risk of developing cancer. According to her, regular consumption of sausages, sausages, bacon and ham is associated with an increased risk of colon and stomach cancer.
