A person's character affects not only their fate, but also their state of health. Phlegmatic, melancholic, choleric and sanguine people suffer from specific diseases depending on their temperament. A calm person does not always mean that he is absolutely healthy. Even a positive sanguine person can be neurotic, and a melancholic person may suffer from depressive states, but thanks to his behavior, he protects his heart. What precautions will help people of any disposition to stay healthy can be found in the Izvestia article.

What causes choleric diseases

Each type of temperament has its own biological characteristics that affect health, explained psychiatrist and psychotherapist Alexei Vilkov to Izvestia.

Choleric people are characterized by increased excitability, they are very often characterized by emotional instability, irritability, even aggressiveness. Because of this, they can fall into a neurotic state," says Vilkov. — Choleric people do not tolerate stress very well. They are characterized by psychosomatics — experiences affect their physical health. Hence the increased blood pressure level — hypertension.

The psyche can really influence a person's physical health, confirms Denis Prokofiev, a general practitioner, cardiologist, and holder of the status of "Moscow Doctor." According to him, choleric people, being people of explosive temperament, are at risk of cardiovascular diseases and problems with the gastrointestinal tract.

One of the main triggers that give rise to the development of diseases and lead to an exacerbation of chronic diseases is increased excitability. It is accompanied by an intense release of the so—called stress hormones — adrenaline, norepinephrine, cortisol, - says Denis Prokofiev.

The general practitioner notes that stress can lead to the development of pathologies of the cardiovascular system and the gastrointestinal tract, and cause skin—related problems, such as the development of psoriasis. Mental balance and physical health require a normal balance of inhibition and arousal, emphasizes Dr. Prokofiev.

Increased irritability primarily indicates that the hormonal background for the production of stress hormones will constantly be increased. And this is not only a negative factor that leads to the development of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, hypertension, but also leads to brain disorders," comments Prokofiev.

If the brain is constantly in an excited state, then the process of transmitting impulses between neurons is disrupted, which can lead to the development of cephalgia and migraines, as well as problems related to memory.

Irritable and angry people are called bilious. However, the biological fluid that is produced by the liver and is necessary for digestion does not affect the character in any way, says Denis Prokofiev. But psychological discomfort can lead to biliary tract spasm and even bile stagnation.

All biological processes in those who have a short temper go much faster. As a result, the heart, kidneys, and blood vessels wear out faster, and any pathology can be detected in each of these organs, warns Prokofiev.

The problems of melancholics

It is believed that such sensitive and thoughtful people as melancholics are more prone to anxiety and depression.

— Most often these are people with hypotension, that is, they have low blood pressure, a low pulse in the form of bradycardia, and a fairly long sleep, — says Prokofiev. — Such features protect the body and allow to increase the resource of the cardiovascular system. But, on the other hand, do not forget that for the normal functioning of the body, the brain and organs must receive sufficient blood and oxygen.

If the blood supply system is not working at full capacity, then there will not be enough oxygen. Its deficiency leads to a decrease in heart activity and metabolic processes, as well as to the development of cerebral hypoxia and intestinal motility disorders. "These problems can occur in people with a melancholic state and depressive status," the expert warns.

Melancholic people have a hard time expressing emotions. They are both characterized by increased anxiety and a tendency to deep emotions. Therefore, melancholics are more likely than anyone else to have anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, or a mixed anxiety-depressive state," explains the psychiatrist.

What do phlegmatics suffer from?

As for phlegmatics, from the point of view of psychiatry they are considered the most stable type. "Phlegmas" are distinguished by their external calmness and, it would seem, react just as calmly to external stimuli. Phlegmatic people are difficult to anger, so they are more stable emotionally. However, sometimes calmness is only external, because such a person hides all his emotions inside, by virtue of his character, not giving them a way out.

— But if a phlegmatic person accumulates emotions, it can make itself felt in terms of psychosomatics. Mental stress affects physical health, causing stroke, heart attack and high blood pressure. If a phlegmatic person accumulates resentments without giving free rein to emotions, then the risk of cancer increases, warns Vilkov.

Phlegmatic people should not hide their worries and stresses behind calmness. Otherwise, problems with the cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal tract are inevitable.

— The psyche forms a person's personality, and all organs and systems are very closely interconnected. Therefore, the most important thing is to pay attention to the symptoms in the form of any functional disorders: increased or decreased blood pressure, pain in absolutely any location, disruptions in the excretory system, menstrual cycle disorders. You should not deal with such problems on your own, without medical help," the expert concludes.

The rational grain is to listen to your body, Prokofiev emphasizes, since the symptoms of the disease exist in order to signal a person about possible problems that require diagnosis and treatment.

Why are sanguine people prone to neurasthenia

Sanguine optimists are light-hearted about life's difficulties, but this lightness lets them down when it comes to health. Such people are not inclined to attach much importance to minor, in their opinion, symptoms, which is why they risk missing a serious problem.

"Positive emotions and an easy attitude towards oneself are not bad, but they certainly need to be controlled," warns Dr. Prokofiev. — And this is important for all types of character, regardless of whether a person is sanguine or phlegmatic. The most important thing is to listen to yourself.

According to the psychiatrist, sanguine people are optimists by nature. They generally manage their emotions easily, but they are shallow and lightweight by nature, which plays a cruel joke on them.

Sanguine people often take on a lot of tasks, but sometimes they can't handle the heavy workload. Therefore, they are characterized by neurasthenia, that is, exhaustion of the nervous system: fatigue accumulates, little strength, sleep is disrupted," the psychiatrist comments.

Because of this, a sanguine person may have anxious fears that he will not be able to cope with tasks, and as a result of stress, concentration decreases, memory deteriorates. Alexey Vilkov also refers to these manifestations as signs of neurasthenia.

What to do to avoid getting sick

The psychiatrist advises choleric patients to master self-regulation techniques, that is, to learn how to control their emotions and master the ability to reduce stress levels. Auto-training, muscle relaxation, meditation and breathing practices are suitable for them.

— It is very important for melancholics to learn techniques for managing emotions and working with negative thoughts in order to become more optimistic, to learn how to block out bad, anxious, depressive thoughts. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps to learn optimism, the psychiatrist suggests.

Alexey Vilkov recommends phlegmatic people to learn how to express their emotions, share them with other people, understand and analyze their feelings. For these purposes, for example, such a direction as gestalt therapy, which teaches how to work with emotions, is suitable.

— And sanguine people should choose stress management techniques. They also need to learn how to plan their time more effectively," the psychiatrist comments. — Sanguine people also benefit from self-regulation techniques so that they can effectively relax, relax, and relieve accumulated stress and fatigue.

The general practitioner recommends that representatives of all types of temperament, at the slightest suspicion of malfunctions in the body, measure temperature, pressure, perform pulse oximetry, and measure glucose levels. If any indicators go out of the norm, this is a reason to seek qualified medical help.
