The President of Colombia announced the residence of drug cartel leaders in Miami
The leaders of the drug cartels, the fight against which US President Donald Trump has intensified in Latin American countries, live abroad, including in the United States itself. This was announced on February 3 by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
"The first line of drug trafficking leaders is not at all what you imagine. The first echelon lives in Dubai, Madrid, Miami. American agencies know them, and I passed their names on to President Trump," the Colombian leader said during a press conference after meeting with the American leader.
The Colombian President positively assessed these negotiations. At the same time, Petro expressed his concerns about further escalation of tensions in the Caribbean region.
"After the genocide in Gaza, which has not yet ended and has not been condemned, the world is moving its eye of the storm to the Caribbean, where it has already hit Caracas and threatened Colombia," Petro said.
Trump himself said that he liked Petro and presented him with a cap with the inscription: "Let's return America to its former greatness," on which Petro later changed the inscription to read: "Let's return America to its former greatness." Thus, he called for taking into account the interests of Latin American countries.
On January 10, the Colombian leader stated that he was counting on a dialogue with Washington that would allow his country to avoid repeating the fate of Venezuela. He stated that he had been invited to the White House for this purpose. On January 7, the US president announced that he had had a telephone conversation with Petro, in which he explained the drug situation and discussed other differences that had arisen between Washington and Bogota. Trump noted that he appreciated the tone of his Colombian counterpart, and said he was looking forward to meeting with him in person in the near future. Petro himself posted a photo on social media the day after the conversation, which depicts the symbols of his country and the United States — a jaguar and an eagle.
On January 3, Trump announced that the United States had launched a large-scale strike on the territory of Venezuela, during which the leader of the state, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Celia Flores, were captured and taken out of the country. Maduro was taken to New York Federal Court on January 5 to face charges. The judge ordered him to appear at the hearing on March 17.
