Representatives of the European Union (EU) are delayed in preparing and adopting the 20th package of sanctions against Russia. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on February 4, citing three unnamed diplomats.

"The 20th package of EU sanctions against Russia is overdue, but waiting is brewing," the article says.

The interlocutors of the publication explained that measures can be taken spontaneously, literally "at any moment." According to two of them, representatives of the alliance were supposed to announce the next package of sanctions on Tuesday, February 3, but this did not happen. According to the third source, the decision will be made next Friday, February 6.

On January 29, the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, announced that the EU leaders plan to introduce a new, 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions. Later, on February 2, the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen said the same thing. She made the corresponding statement during a telephone conversation with President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky.

On January 30, Bloomberg suggested that, as part of the new measures, Europe could replace the ceiling on Russian oil prices, while banning the transportation of this natural oily combustible liquid and products from it by sea. Later it became known that the EU may ban the import of copper and platinum from Russia. In addition to these metals, restrictions may also apply to iridium and rhodium.

The newspaper Die Welt reported on December 31, 2025, that a future package of sanctions against the Russian Federation could be timed to coincide with the anniversary of the start of a special military operation. At that time, it was emphasized that, among other things, the leaders of the alliance could ban the import of uranium from Russia as part of restrictions against Rosatom.
