The media pointed to the low probability of India's rapid abandonment of Russian oil
India's rapid abandonment of Russian oil is highly unlikely. This was reported on February 3 by the Hindu Business Line newspaper, citing analysts and representatives of the oil refining industry.
"She (India. — ed.) is unlikely to completely stop them (oil supplies from the Russian Federation. — Ed.) in the near future, as this could have a devastating impact on the country's economic growth," the article says.
Analysts emphasize that so far there are no official instructions from the Indian government to stop buying oil from Russia. Logistics chains also support continued imports: Russian oil shipments are usually booked 10 weeks in advance, so shipments ordered earlier will arrive at Indian ports by the end of March — April 2026.
Following talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 2, Trump said that India had allegedly agreed to stop buying Russian oil. He also said that the parties had agreed to reduce mutual tariffs and increase purchases by the Indian side of American energy, technology, agricultural products and coal worth over $500 billion.
Modi himself did not comment on this statement, only noting that Trump's leadership is of great importance for the stability and prosperity of the world. The American president, in turn, added that the United States had concluded a favorable trade deal with India.
On the same day, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that Russian oil is in demand in the Indian energy market. He added that Moscow sees only public statements by the American side. According to him, Russia will monitor the real development of the situation with the import of Russian oil to India.
