Pollock supplies to the Russian market have reached a historic high
In 2025, Russian fishermen supplied a record 271 thousand tons of pollock products to the domestic market, which is 7% more than in the previous year. On February 3, the Association of Pollock Miners (ADM) informed Izvestia about this.
"Since 2013, the supply of pollock products to the domestic market has increased almost 4.5 times, and they have been consistently growing since 2022. At first glance, it may seem that this is a forced orientation of Russian fishermen towards sanctions restrictions. But in fact, this is the result of the systematic work of all participants in the supply chain to develop domestic demand for the most fished fish species in the country," said Alexey Buglak, President of the ADM.
According to ADM, the largest increase in supplies last year was demonstrated by the most popular types of products among Russian consumers: frozen pollock — 188 thousand tons (+6%) and pollock fillets — over 55 thousand tons (+20%). Supplies of minced meat and pollock surimi (a total of 30 thousand tons) are kept at a high level.
"The average per capita consumption of pollock in Russia by the end of 2025 is estimated at 4.4 kg, and its share in the fish basket is at the level of 20%. It's not a small number, but it's definitely not the limit," Buglak said.
In 2024, the Association launched the Far Eastern Pollock collective promotion program, which includes advertising campaigns, culinary projects and festivals.
"The popularity of pollock has grown, and our next step is to develop our product range and produce products that are diverse and in demand by different audiences. Together with FEFU technologists, we have developed prototypes of such products and today we will present them to the largest companies in the field of processing, retail and catering. We hope that by the end of the year, more new and relevant pollock—based products will appear on Russian shelves," Buglak said.
Russia remains the world leader in pollock production: in 2025, the catch reached a record 2.2 million tons. High volumes make it possible to develop the domestic market and maintain a leading position in the international arena.
In December last year, the head of the All-Russian Association of Fisheries Enterprises, Entrepreneurs and Exporters (VARPE), German Zverev, said that cod, mackerel and pollock are the most beloved fish among Russians. It is noted that Russians consume fish products below the standards recommended by the Ministry of Health.
On October 29, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted at a meeting that the consumption of fish and seafood by Russian citizens lags behind the recommended norm. He stressed that Russians should be able to buy fish at an affordable price.
