Folk signs for February 4: what can and cannot be done
In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Wednesday, February 4, and what church holidays are celebrated on this day.
Folk signs for February 4th
In Russia, Timothy's Day, also known as Timothy the Half-winter, was celebrated on February 4. The holiday marked the conditional middle of winter, which was reflected in its name. The peasants believed that this was a turning point, after which spring was not far away. On this day, special attention was traditionally paid to the well-being of the family and household, including counting stocks before the end of the cold weather.
In the old days, the day started early. The housewives put a hearty meal on the table — cabbage soup, porridge, stewed meat to give strength to the household. They always baked bread. The dough was prepared for him in the evening, and the dough that came up well was considered a good omen for the year. Some of the fresh pastries were shared with neighbors or served to those in need. Special care was taken for the cattle: the animals were fed with selected food, and juniper branches were hung over the entrance to the barn to protect them from illness and the evil eye.
Weather signs on Timofeyev Day were of great importance, helping to plan future agricultural work. For example, a severe frost on February 4 promised a prolonged and cold spring, while a thaw, on the contrary, foreshadowed early warmth. A good sign was the clear sun, which promised a fruitful year.
Other signs of the day:
- windows fog up, leading to a rapid warming;
- poultry hides its head under its wing — for the night cold snap;
- snow will fall in large flakes by a moderate and rainy spring.;
- the trees were covered with fluffy frost — for a good grain harvest in summer.
What not to do on February 4th
According to popular beliefs, evil spirits became active at the turn of winter. To protect ourselves and our family from harm, our ancestors followed a number of strict rules. For example, it was strictly forbidden to quarrel loudly and swear, so as not to attract evil forces into the dwelling. Also, on Timofeyev Day, they tried not to do needlework — sewing or knitting, otherwise they could accidentally "sew up" happiness.
What else can not be done on February 4th:
- lending and borrowing money leads to debt problems for the whole year;
- cut your hair and nails — shorten your destiny or lose your health;
- looking in the mirror for elderly people for a long time foreshadowed a decline in strength.;
- telling someone about your good dreams that you saw that night is to scare away your luck.
What is the church holiday on February 4th?
On February 4 (January 22, Old Style), the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Timothy the Apostle, a disciple of St. Paul, who lived in Asia Minor in the first century. Timothy became a faithful companion of the Apostle Paul in his missionary journeys, sharing all the hardships with the teacher. For his dedication and hard work, Paul called Timothy his beloved son. Later, the apostle ordained him bishop of the Ephesian Church, which Timothy wisely ruled for about 15 years.
The Apostle Timothy completed his earthly journey as a martyr. In Ephesus, during a pagan festival, he tried to reason with the townspeople by denouncing idolatry. An angry crowd attacked the preacher, stoned him and beat him with clubs. It happened around the year of Our Lord 80. In the fourth century, the holy relics of the apostle were solemnly transferred to Constantinople and laid in the Church of the Holy Apostles.
On the same date, the Venerable Martyr Anastasius of Persia is remembered. He lived in the 7th century in Persia (on the territory of modern Iran). As a soldier in the Persian army, Anastasius heard about the miracles performed by the Life-giving Cross of the Lord in Jerusalem. This aroused his interest in the Christian faith. During his service in Byzantium, he became acquainted with Christians and was baptized.
Later, after leaving military service, Anastasy worked as a monk in a monastery in Jerusalem. He spent seven years in the monastery, spending his time in prayer and labors. After receiving the revelation of his impending martyrdom, Anastasius went to Caesarea in Palestine, where he openly confessed his Christian faith to the Persian authorities. For this, he was captured and, after much torture, sentenced to death.

The Venerable Martyr Anastasy Persyanin is asked for help in strengthening his personal faith, in moments of life's trials, and to gain courage in the face of difficulties.
Prayer to Timothy of Ephesus
"O holy Apostle Timothy of Christ, having labored with good deeds on earth, you have received in heaven the crown of righteousness that the Lord has prepared for all who love him; as we gaze upon your holy image, we rejoice at the most glorious end of your residence and honor your holy memory.But you, standing before the Throne of God, accept our supplications and offer them to the All-merciful God, that He may forgive us every sin and help us against the wiles of the devil, so that, having been delivered from sorrows, diseases, troubles and misfortunes, and all evil, we may live piously and righteously in our present age and be worthy of your intercession, even if we are unworthy. May you see the good in the lands of the living, glorifying God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen to that."

We humbly bow down to your image and implore you with tenderness: mercifully look upon our sorrows of soul and body and grant us salvation; help us, O holy one of God, from the slander of evil men, from whom you yourself innocently suffered.Protect us from the violence of the devil, who is passionately fighting in our weak souls, and beseech the Lord God and His Most Pure One. Amen to that."
